YMCA of Medicine Hat Announces Accessibility Initiatives

The YMCA of Medicine Hat is excited to announce several projects in support of enhancing accessibility within our programs and physical spaces.

Thanks to the generous support of the Kinsmen Club of Medicine Hat, the YMCA will soon unveil two new barrier-free universal changerooms at our Downtown Branch. These changerooms will feature fully accessible washroom and shower facilities. Construction commenced in early May and is expected to be completed mid-June.

In addition, the Y will embark on a renovation project to modernize the Downtown YMCA’s lobby and membership desk. The renovations will include the installation of a new desk with both sitting and standing heights to serve individuals with mobility challenges. Additionally, based on post-pandemic attendance trends, a new child minding location will be established on the ground floor. These upgrades are part of our commitment to creating inclusive spaces for all members and staff.

"The YMCA is dedicated to ensuring our programs and facilities are as inclusive as possible," says Sharon Hayward, CEO of YMCA of Medicine Hat. "The introduction of universal washrooms and the renovation of our lobby exemplify our commitment to meeting the diverse needs of our community. We extend heartfelt gratitude to the Kinsmen Club of Medicine Hat for their support."

YMCA of Medicine Hat is also proud to announce the launch of WorkABILITIES, an innovative employment program specifically designed to assist individuals with disabilities in finding and maintaining meaningful work. Additionally, we are currently in the process of rebranding our longstanding Young Moms' Program to Y Parent, signaling a restructuring effort to ensure that young parents of all genders receive the support they need while navigating the challenges of parenthood.

YMCA of Medicine Hat's accessibility initiatives underline our unwavering commitment to inclusivity and accessibility. By improving our physical spaces and introducing tailored programs, we aim to create an environment where everyone can thrive and lead their best lives.
