Reports To: Y Treasure Assistant Manager

Pay Grid: Level 1 ($17.50/hr)

Department: Y Treasure

Hours: Part time (35hrs/week), Temporary (8 weeks)

What qualifications are we looking for?

The successful candidate will have the following:

Education/Certifications/Credentials/Professional Registration

• Standard First Aid, CPR-Level C

• Evidence of a clear Police Information Check (with Vulnerable Sector Search if applicable), within the last six months

Canada Summer Jobs (CSJ) Grant Criteria

• Between 15 and 30 years (inclusive) at the start of employment

• Canadian Citizen, permanent resident, or person to whom refugee protection has

been conferred under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act (NOTE:

International students are not eligible for the CSJ program)

• Have a valid Social Insurance Number at the start of employment

• Legally entitled to work in Canada in accordance with relevant provincial or territorial

legislation and regulations

Knowledge & Skills

• Exceptional interpersonal skills and ability to build positive relationships throughout the community

• Previous experience working in a thrift store is an asset

• Ability to meet targets by established deadlines

What does this role look like at the YMCA of Southeastern Alberta?

Reporting to the Y Treasure Thrift Store Assistant Manager, the Y Treasure Thrift Store Dock Attendant is responsible for bringing in and storing all donated merchandise made to the store as well as following all safety guidelines, and assisting with sorting and stocking of merchandise

The responsibilities and duties of this role will include but is not limited to:

Customer Service

• Ensure all staff understand and can communicate appreciation and gratitude to customers for their donations, while explaining how the YMCA uses any revenue generated from the store to fund its charitable programs

• Assist and support clerks in resolving customer concerns or complaints related to donations & merchandise

• Work effectively within the Y Treasure Thrift Store team, contributing to its overall success by:

• Promoting the YMCA’s annual Y Connect Campaign

• Promoting and/or attending YMCA events

• Other duties to assist the team, as assigned

• Support, and motivate the team of employees and volunteers working in the store to consistently follow donation procedures

• Assist clerks throughout the store when coverage is needed

• Work as part of the team to achieve monthly and annual sales targets

Standards that Shine

• Achieve all quality standards and targets established under YMCA best practices and the YMCA’s Standards that Shine

• General cleaning as required around the store, sorting area, and loading dock

• Support clerks to ensure the customer and donor experience at Y Treasure is convenient and exceptional

Interpersonal/Communication Skills

• Communicate effectively with coworkers, managers, volunteers and the senior leadership team

• Ensure workplace conflicts are resolved quickly, following YMCA policies and procedures

• Use communication skills to build relationships with business, organizations, customers, and donors to ensure they have an exceptional experience

Quality of Work

• Ensure donation storage areas consistently meet fire code requirements

• Ensure loading dock area is kept clear

• Assist customers dropping off donations

• Bring donated items into the sorting area from the loading dock

• Ensure donations are stored safely (unsorted and sorted items)

• Transfer donations to storage, as needed

• Assist with sorting, pricing, hanging, bailing stock, and putting merchandise out on the sales floor as needed

Compliance with Legislation and YMCA Policies and Procedure

• Adherence to the following at all times:

• YMCA Child Protection and Operational Policies and Procedures

• Public health and safety regulations, fire code

• Occupational Health and Safety

• Employment Standards

• Working knowledge of the Government of Canada’s Industry Guide to Second-Hand Products and Canada Consumer Product Safety Act

• Wear steel toe boots at your cost

Work Environment and Physical Demands

• The store is located on the main floor, however occasional use of one flight of stairs may be required to access storage areas

• Standing on feet most of the day, regularly walking throughout the store, Steel toe boots required

• Moving and transporting donated items, requiring ability to lift up to 50 lbs

• Hanging clothing items and placing them on clothing racks

• Stocking shelves

• May be exposed to all weather conditions when walking outside to/from vehicle.

• May be exposed to all weather conditions when using a vehicle for occasional business purposes (e.g., traveling between sites).

• May be exposed to animal hair, droppings, and/or the smell of cigarette smoke on donated items
