The successful candidate will have the following:
Education/Certifications/Credentials/Professional Registration
• Standard First Aid, CPR-Level C
• Evidence of a clear Police Information Check (with Vulnerable Sector Search if applicable), within the last six months
Knowledge & Skills
• Exceptional customer service skills
• Previous experience working in a retail environment is an asset
• Ability to operate a cash register and POS system
• Ability to work quickly to meet targets by established deadlines
What does this role look like at the YMCA of Southeastern Alberta?
Reporting to the Y Treasure Thrift Store Assistant Manager, the Y Treasure Sorter/Clerk is responsible for working in the back-end of the store to receive, move, sort, process, and price donated items, as well as working in the public-facing portion of the store, being able to run the POS system and putting merchandise on the sales floor.
The responsibilities and duties of this role will include but is not limited to:
Customer Service
• Greet customers donating items at the back loading dock, assisting with unloading items if needed
• Thank customers for their donation and explain how the YMCA uses any revenue generated from the Thrift Store
• Ability to serve customers as they check out by operating the cash register and POS system to provide occasional coverage, when needed.
• Answer the phone, answer questions, and redirect as needed
• Respond to initial customer complaints or concerns, escalating them to the assistant manager if appropriate

• Work effectively within the Y Treasure Thrift Store team, contributing to its overall success by:

• Promoting and/or attending YMCA events

• Other duties to assist the team, as assigned
• Front-end operations as needed, including operating the cash register and putting merchandise on the sales floor
• Assist with moving donations to storage areas, sort clothing and housewares, price merchandise, put merchandise on the sales floor, and bailing merchandise.
• Work as part of the team to achieve monthly and annual sales targets

• Achieve all quality standards and targets established under YMCA best practices and the YMCA’s Standards that Shine
• General cleaning as required around the store, sorting area, and loading dock
• Ensuring all staff are aware of Standards that Shine standards, and work with them to create a culture of excellence in adherence to guidelines.
• Ensure the loading dock area is kept clear and all donations flow seamlessly into the store’s sorting process
• Ensure the sales floor is always fully stocked so customers have a convenient and exceptional experience
Interpersonal/Communication Skills
• Communicate effectively with coworkers, managers, volunteers and the senior leadership team
• Ensure workplace conflicts are resolved quickly, following YMCA policies and procedures
• Use communication skills to provide customers and donors with an exceptional experience
Quality of Work
• Process donations, including sorting, hanging, pricing, and tagging.
• Ensure efficient and consistent flow of processed donated items onto the sales floor so shelves and clothing racks are always fully stocked
• Assist with rotating merchandise, as needed
• Determine which items are unsuitable for re-sale and ensure they are bailed and/or recycled, as per YMCA policy
• Ability to open and close the store, including cash out procedures, security system arming/disarming, unlocking/locking the building, etc.
• Run POS system and assist customers
• Create displays in display windows and sales floor with merchandise that are visually appealing
Compliance with Legislation and YMCA Policies and Procedure
• Adherence to the following at all times:

• Employment Standards
• Working knowledge of the Government of Canada’s Industry Guide to Second-Hand Products and Canada Consumer Product Safety Act
Work Environment and Physical Demands
• The store is located on the main floor, however occasional use of one flight of stairs may be required to access storage areas
• Standing on feet most of the day, regularly walking throughout the store
• Hanging clothing items and placing them on clothing racks
• Stocking shelves
• Ability to lift approximately 20 – 30 lbs. (bags, boxes, other donated items)
• May be exposed to animal hair, droppings, and/or the smell of cigarette smoke on donated items
