Position Title: Career/Employment Advisor

Location: YMCA of Southeastern Alberta-Brooks Employment Office

Reports To: Career & Employment Supervisor

Pay Grid: $20-$23/hour

Department: Brooks Employment Centre

Hours: 40 hours per week

What qualifications are we looking for?

The successful candidate will have the following:

Education/Certifications/Credentials/Professional Registration

• University Degree or Diploma in Human Services/ HR/Social Sciences and/or Business

• Standard First Aid, CPR-Level C

• Evidence of a clear Police Information Check (with Vulnerable Sector Search if applicable), within the last six months

• Must have a valid driver’s license with a class 07 automobile insurance coverage business use (or pleasure with occasional business use) and a minimum of $2,000,000 in liability coverage.

Knowledge & Skills

• Proficiency with Microsoft Excel, Word, and Outlook

• Knowledge of employment, education, and training strategies, local labor market information and community resources

• Exceptional customer service attitude and skills

• Organizational and time management skills

• Strong leadership and communication skills

What does this role look like at the YMCA of Southeastern Alberta?

Reporting to the Director of Employment Services, the Career and Employment Advisor will assist individuals in providing comprehensive and individualized services that enable job seekers to acquire workplace and occupational skills allowing them to re-enter the workforce as quickly as possible. 

The responsibilities and duties of this role will include but is not limited to:

Customer Service

• Assist participants with resume development, job search strategies, interview skills, training opportunities, career planning, employability skills and labour market information

• Initiate, develop and maintain employer contacts by marketing our programs

• Negotiate job placements and work experience opportunities for clients with employers in the City of Brooks, County of Newell region

• Respond to phone calls/emails within 24 business hours

• Greet customers/program participants professionally and courteously

• Communicate effectively with coworkers, supervisors, managers, and the senior leadership team

• Ensure workplace conflicts are resolved quickly, following YMCA policies and procedures

• Ensure all tasks are completed accurately and in a timely manner

• Provide ongoing coaching on a one-on-one basis for individuals connecting to the workforce

• Conduct a thorough assessment to help clients identify their interests, skills, and abilities, and relate them to the workforce

• Assist clients in identifying and addressing barriers to employment

Compliance with Legislation and YMCA Policies and Procedure

• Adherence to the following at all times:

• YMCA Child Protection and Operational Polices and Procedures

• Public health and safety regulations

• Occupational Health and Safety

Work Environment and Physical Demands

• Office located on the main floor.

• Sitting at a desk and using a computer for most of the day

• From time to time, may need to lift boxes of files weighing up to 20 lbs

• May be exposed to all weather conditions when walking outside to/from vehicle.

• May be exposed to all weather conditions when using vehicle for occasional business purposes (e.g., going to an employer meeting).
