Position Title: Community Helpers Coordinator

Reports To: Director of Community Programs

Pay Grid: $21-$25/hour

Department: Community Programs

Hours: 37.5 hours/week (Temporary until March 31, 2028)

What qualifications are we looking for?

The successful candidate will have the following:

Education/Certifications/Credentials/Professional Registration

• University Degree or Diploma in Human Services/Social Services/ Social Work

• Standard First Aid, CPR-Level C

• Evidence of a clear Police Information Check (with Vulnerable Sector Search if applicable), within the last six months

• Must have a valid driver’s license with a class 07 automobile insurance coverage business use (or pleasure with occasional business use) and a minimum of

$2,000,000 in liability coverage

Knowledge & Skills

• Strong leadership and communication skills

• Experience facilitating with groups

• Experience working with diverse populations

• Organization and time management skills

• Exceptional customer service attitude and skills

• Knowledgeable in mental wellness challenges and community supports

• Proficient in Microsoft Excel, Word and Outlook

What does this role look like at the YMCA of Southeastern Alberta?

Reporting to the Director of Community Programs, the Community Helpers Coordinator, is responsible for administering a peer support program focused on mental health promotion and suicide awareness. Our goals is to build the capacity of youth and young adults in our community to help others access formal support and to address stigma related to help- seeking.

The responsibilities and duties of this role will include but is not limited to:

Customer Service

• Be committed to exceptional customer service and create opportunities to enhance

every person’s YMCA experience

• Represents the YMCA and association in a professional manner is internal and external forums

• Build community capacity for mental health promotion

• Provide young people and our community with accurate information and resources related to mental health and suicide prevention

• Facilitate training sessions with up to 30 people

• Attend all YMCA meetings as required

• Work effectively within the Community team, contributing to its overall success by:

• Promoting the YMCA’s annual Y Connect Campaign

• Promoting and/or attending YMCA events

• Contributing to a positive and healthy workplace culture

• Other duties to assist the team, as assigned

• Work effectively with the community to provide training, information and resources related to mental health and suicide prevention

• Work in a team environment to achieve optimal, collective results

• General cleaning as required around the facility

• Ensuring all staff are aware of Standards that Shine, and work with them to create a culture of excellence in adherence to guidelines and expectations outlined by the Standards that Shine.

Interpersonal/Communication Skills

• Communicate effectively with coworkers, supervisors, managers, and the senior leadership team

• Ensure workplace conflicts are resolved quickly, following YMCA policies and procedures

• Consult with Director of Community Services to regularly reflect on, and improve, service delivery

• Ensure all tasks are completed in a timely manner

• Initiate, develop, and maintain contact with youth and “Helpers”

• Able to deal with difficult or sensitive situations and complaints with confidence

• Ensure a safe, comfortable, and welcoming environment for participants

• Maintain a strength-based approach that inspires participants to engage in self- development and change

• Maintain knowledge of relevant services and community resources

• Engages with schools, community agencies, and other organizations to maximize services and resources to participants

• Work with defined program budgets

Compliance with Legislation and YMCA Policies and Procedure

• Adherence to the following at all times:

• YMCA Child Protection and Operational Policies and Procedures

• Public health and safety regulations

• Occupational Health and Safety

• Adheres to all Risk Management and Occupational Health and Safety requirements, including Work Alone Policy and Procedures and the Children, Youth and Vulnerable Adults Protection Policies and Procedures

• Adheres to obligations outlined in our funding contracts

Work Environment and Physical Demands

• Office located on ground level

• May lift or move items up to 50 lbs

• May be exposed to all weather conditions while working outside

• May be exposed to verbal/physical abuse from external/internal clients/guests
