Position Title: Lifeguard/Swim Instructor

Location: YMCA of Southeastern Alberta

Reports To: HFA Program Manager

Pay Grid: $16.00-$19.00.

Department: Health Fitness and Aquatics

What qualifications are we looking for?

The successful candidate will have the following:

Education/Certifications/Credentials/Professional Registration

  • Aquatics Certifications (National Lifeguard Service (NLS), YMCA Swim Instructor, Water Safety Instructor (WSI), Aquatic Emergency Care)

  • Standard First Aid, CPR-Level C, and WHIMIS Certification

  • Evidence of a clear Police Information Check (with Vulnerable Sector Search if applicable), within the last six months

  • Must have a valid driver’s license with a class 07 automobile insurance coverage business use (or pleasure with occasional business use) and a minimum of $2,000,000 in liability coverage.

Knowledge & Skills

  • Exceptional customer service skills

  • Ability to act professionally in all situations, representing the YMCA according to its core values.

  • Able to deal with difficult situations and complaints with confidence.

  • Excellent communication, organization, and time management skills

  • Evidence of a clear Police Record Search (with Vulnerable Sector Check only if working with children), within the last six months

What does this role look like at the YMCA of Southeastern Alberta?

This position reports to the Aquatics Supervisor and will provide high quality aquatic services that meet the needs of the YMCA members and community.

The responsibilities and duties of this role will include but is not limited to:

Customer Service

  • Be committed to exceptional customer service and member engagement.

  • Have positive interactions with members throughout the building; never just walk by a member.

  • Identify and create opportunities to enhance each and every person’s YMCA experience.

  • Deliver high quality supervision at all times while on guard duty, guard from appropriate location and follow guard to bather ratio. Correct unsafe techniques and ensure safe and effective use of equipment by participants.

  • Are knowledgeable of YMCA programs and services.

  • Coverage for Special Events as required.

SAM Standards

  • Ensure all department areas conform and meet YMCA SAM 2.1 standards and expectations.

  • Keep pool area clean and organized.

  • Complete daily cleaning tasks and checklists

  • General cleaning as required around the facility.

Interpersonal/Communication Skills

  • Communicate effectively with coworkers, supervisors, managers, and the senior Submit any comments/complaints to the appropriate staff for follow-up.

  • Be accessible and available to respond to concerns/issues as required.

  • Communicate a large quantity of information clearly and concisely in person and over the telephone by understanding the organizational structure of the YMCA Medicine Hat

Quality of Work

  • Candidates must be able to workdays, evenings and weekends.

  • Always providing a safe and positive environment where children/youth/adults can learn, develop skills, and make new friends.

  • Complete administrative tasks, update class rosters, lesson plans, check equipment, clean equipment, update records and perform light maintenance tasks when not guarding or instructing.

  • When instructing, develop lesson plans for assigned classes and provide quality instruction in aquatic class(es) agreed upon.

  • Attend all scheduled in-services, staff training, and YMCA staff meetings.

Compliance with Legislation and YMCA Policies and Procedures

  • Follow all YMCA policies and procedures.

  • Ensure all necessary health and safety procedures are adhered to (preventative check of toys/equipment, fire safety, emergency and accident procedures, cleaning practices, etc.)

  • Promote prevention of accidents and incidents through rule enforcement and good maintenance practices. Follow Provincial and Local Public Health regulations at all times and monitor and reinforce Aquatics Safety Standards.

  • Respond to all incidents and accidents that may occur in the aquatic or surrounding area.

  • Perform all scheduled water tests.

Work Environment and Physical Demands

  • Work in loud noisy environment

  • May be going from standing to seating positions, from standing to kneeling positions, from kneeling to standing positions, from seating to standing positions for most of the working day, there will be walking throughout the day.

  • Walking up and down stairs

  • May lift or move items up to 50 lbs. including children.

  • Working on a computer screen, computer keyboard and mouse

  • May be exposed to children or adults who may not be vaccinated.

  • May be exposed to verbal/physical abuse from external and internal clients.
