MEDICINE HAT, MARCH 10, 2021 – Under the guidance and direction of Alberta Health Services (AHS), the YMCA of Medicine Hat has been actively working since March 2020 to implement preventative measures to reduce the threat of COVID-19 within its programs. This afternoon we were advised that an employee who works at the YMCA Employment Centre – Brooks Office tested positive for COVID-19. As a result, AHS has directed the YMCA to temporarily close both YMCA Employment Centre office locations in Brooks located at 197A 200 Horticulture Station Rd SE and 403 2 Ave W while contact tracing occurs. We anticipate this closure will last until March 24th. Once re-opening details have been finalized and confirmed by AHS, we will share them with the community.

Due to the YMCA’s stringent policies on PPE and screening, the staff member was asymptomatic and masked while at work. Additionally, all Covid-19 public health guidelines have been followed within the program including increased sanitization and disinfecting, moving to appointment-only services, reduced capacity, increased social distancing, etc. For everyone’s protection, the offices will receive additional deep cleaning and sanitization during this closure.

The YMCA’s Employment Centre in Medicine Hat is not impacted by this situation and will continue to operate. Anyone in the Brooks area requiring employment services during this temporary closure should contact the Medicine Hat office at 403-529-4733 or employment@medicinehatymca.ca .

“Since the beginning of this pandemic, the YMCA and Alberta Health Services have been in close contact, working together to ensure the safety of YMCA staff and families” said Sharon Hayward, CEO YMCA of Medicine Hat. “Our approach at all times, has been guided by local and provincial health officials. While all recommended protocols were in place, we continue to review our efforts to ensure a safe environment at our YMCA. We are grateful for the ongoing support and direction from local health agencies and our community. We will continue to work together to fight the spread of COVID-19.”
