MEDICINE HAT, DECEMBER 26, 2020 – Under the guidance and direction of AHS South Zone Medical Officer of Health, the YMCA of Medicine Hat, has been actively working since August 31, 2020 to implement preventative measures to reduce the threat of COVID-19 spread within YMCA of Medicine Hat’s licensed Before & After School Care Programs. On December 24th we were advised that an employee who worked in the December 21st licensed day camp tested positive for COVID-19. Due to the YMCA’s stringent policies on PPE, screening, and sign-in, the staff member was asymptomatic and wearing a mask at all times they were in our facility. Additionally, all Covid-19 public health guidelines have been followed within the program including increased sanitization and disinfecting, reduced capacity, increased social distancing, etc. For everyone’s protection, the facility received additional deep cleaning and sanitization earlier today.

Approximately 28 children attended the December 21st day camp, and all families were notified via letter on December 24th that their children are considered to be close contacts and must self-isolate, as per public health regulations. After reviewing the details of the situation and the current public health regulations for licensed childcare programs, the AHS South Zone Medical Officer of Health has advised the YMCA that it is safe to continue offering licensed day camps as scheduled next week.

“Since the beginning of this pandemic, the YMCA and Alberta Health Services have been in close contact, working together to ensure the safety of YMCA staff and families” said Sharon Hayward, CEO YMCA of Medicine Hat. “Our approach at all times, has been guided by local and provincial health officials. While all recommended protocols were in place, we continue to review our efforts to ensure a safe environment at our YMCA. We are grateful for the ongoing support and direction from local health agencies and our community. We will continue to work together to fight the spread of COVID-19.”
