Medicine Hat, Alberta (October 8, 2020): The YMCA Employment Centre, in partnership with Alberta Labour, Alberta Supports – Employment Hub, and Medicine Hat College, will be hosting a series of drive-thru job fairs over the coming year.

This exciting initiative will help connect jobseekers to employers who have active job openings in our region while still adhering to COVID-19 social distancing measures. “Essentially, this will be similar to what you would expect at a typical in-person recruitment event in that employers will provide information on job opportunities and their hiring process, while combining a drive-thru format with in-person interviews for qualified candidates. Many employers have told us that they are in significant need of workers, but have found it harder to recruit during COVID-19 due to occupancy limits and public closures of some venues.”, says Jodie Engbert, YMCA Employment Centre Manager. “This concept will help allow in-person interactions in a manner that minimizes contact and adheres to guidelines outlined by Alberta Health Services and local authorities”.

COVID-19 has had an extraordinary impact on employment within Medicine Hat and Alberta as a whole. Alberta’s Labour Force Survey for August 2020 indicated that the unemployment rate within the Lethbridge-Medicine Hat region sits at 8.6%, which is lower than the provincial rate of 13.5%. This partnership will put an innovative spin on facilitating connections and creating awareness of job opportunities currently available which, according to Engbert, are steps needed as our region focuses on economic recovery from COVID-19.

“The ultimate goal of this initiative is to help fill those job vacancies. We may all have different mandates in how we support jobseekers, but by joining together and forming this partnership, we can have a much broader reach”.

The first event will host Borea Construction, who is looking for an estimated 100 labourers for work at a variety of solar project sites in Tilley, Hays, and Jenner. The drive-thru event will take place on October 18 and 19 on Gershaw Drive (at the former Nissan dealership).
