YMCA Employment Centre announces second Drive-Thru Recruitment Event in support of regional employers

Medicine Hat, Alberta (October 27, 2020): With the first highly successful Drive-Thru Recruitment Event wrapped up, the YMCA Employment Centre and partners are gearing up for round two on November 25, 2020. Last month, the partnership group consisting of the YMCA Employment Centre, Medicine Hat College, and Government of Alberta (Community & Social Services and Labour & Immigration) worked together to host a drive-thru job fair for Borea Construction, who was looking to hire approximately 100 employees for three renewable energy projects in southeastern Alberta.

“The first event surpassed our expectations and was a resounding success” says Jodie Engbert, YMCA Employment Centre Manager. “With the support of our team and partners, Borea Construction was able to conduct 220 one-on-one interviews with jobseekers at the event, and will be advancing approximately 75 of those jobseekers into the next phase of their recruitment process over the coming weeks, with the potential for more as the project nears its start date”.

COVID-19 has created some challenges for businesses looking to recruit employees. With strict safe-gathering protocols in place, it can be difficult to meet with jobseekers in person, while maintaining the social distancing and sanitization processes needed. “After listening to employers sharing these challenges with all of our agencies, we got together and formed a partnership to answer this call, so to speak” says Engbert.

The drive-thru events, which are free to employers, allows them to use the expertise of the partnership group to conduct their recruitment activities in a COVID-friendly environment. Engbert stresses “the partnership group takes cares of all the logistics to ensure it all runs smoothly from securing a venue, set up/take down, sanitization, traffic flow, supplying event volunteers, and promotions. Basically the only thing employers have to do is provide some preliminary information and then show up to interact with jobseekers on the day of the event”.

The partnership group hopes that by offering an alternative to the traditional job fair, employers and jobseekers within the region can safely connect, with the ultimate goal of helping Albertans find employment.

The next event will take place on Wednesday, November 25, with location and times to be announced. As space is very limited, employers interested in participating can complete an application form outlining their recruitments needs at: https://medicinehatymca.ca/DriveThru. Applications will be accepted until November 9 at noon.
