Hello YMCA Members, Staff & Volunteers!

It’s official: the Government of Alberta has announced stage 2 of the provincial “relaunch” which includes the opening of health, fitness and aquatic centres and community centres as early as Friday, June 12, 2020 across Alberta.

The YMCA of Medicine Hat has been preparing to welcome you back to YMCA Health and Fitness Centres and YMCA Employment Centres since the moment we closed. We’ve missed you, and today’s announcement means that our spaces will soon we available for you to connect and thrive again.

We know you are excited to find out when your Y will reopen. While the Government of Alberta has announced that health and fitness centres and community centres can open, we need time to understand the guidelines to provide you with a safe and enjoyable experience upon your return. We are also in the process of finishing up several facility improvements and would like to complete the major projects before re-opening.

As a result, we do not yet have a firm opening date. We anticipate that our Employment Centres will open first and our health and fitness centres will start to open as early as July. Keep an eye for emails from us, or visit us on Facebook, Instagram or Twitter for the latest as it’s announced.

Here are some details that we are excited to share about July’s opening:

  • The YMCA of Medicine Hat will be meeting or exceeding all Government of Alberta and Alberta Health guidelines and recommendations for the safe and healthy operation of health and fitness centres and employment centres.

  • Your YMCA team has learned a lot from our experience opening YMCA Child Care and from YMCAs in other provinces that have already reopened health, fitness and community centres. We know that a cautious and measured approach is best and we will be applying this knowledge to ensure YMCA spaces are ready, and that you, our valued members, have the information and time you need to become comfortable with the new environment.

  • The YMCA environment will look and operate differently than it did when we closed. For example, there will be a requirement to check in as you enter the facility, enhanced cleaning procedures, smaller class sizes and extra space between equipment and participants in our fitness centres. All changes are to increase the safety and health of the YMCA environment for you, our employees and dedicated volunteers.

Members will receive information prior to opening to ensure you have all the information you need to feel welcomed and comfortable on your first visit, and every visit thereafter.

While we know there will be changes to YMCA spaces, one thing that has not changed is the fact that our YMCA community is made up of kind and caring individuals who know how important it is for kids, families and individuals to have a safe place to connect, belong and thrive. We know that the need for these opportunities has increased through this period of isolation, while at the same time, the financial situation of many in our community has worsened. As we look to reopening our facilities to members, we know that the need for financial assistance is eminent and the generosity of our members are needed and appreciated more than ever.

Stay tuned for more information on all YMCA opening plans and timelines in the coming days, including a schedule of outdoor fitness classes to get you connecting even before the doors of our physical spaces open next month.
