Dr. Chris Baba | President

Dr. Baba was born and raised in Medicine Hat. Chris served in the Army Reserves for over five years and was the soldier chosen to represent his Regiment in Europe for the 60th anniversary of the Liberation of Holland.

Chris attended Medicine Hat College for two years and then entered the Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry at the University of Alberta where he earned his Bachelor of Medical Science and Doctor of Dental Surgery degrees. As the president of his dentistry class, Chris was heavily involved in student governance and served on several faculty committees.

Since moving back to Medicine Hat with his wife Amanda, Chris founded two dental clinics and has been a member of the Kinsmen Club of Medicine Hat where he co-chaired the 32nd Kinsmen Home Lotto. Health and fitness promotion have always been an important part of his life and he has been a YMCA member since his teens.  While on the YMCA board, Chris has served as the chair of the Governance Committee before becoming the board President. He looks forward to many more years of service to his patients and the community.

Tyler Pocsik*| Chair, Finance & Audit Committee

Born and raised in Medicine Hat, Tyler joined the Medicine Hat YMCA in 2005. Through his time at the YMCA Tyler found his passion in powerlifting, and helped co-found the Medicine Hat Powerlifting Club (MHPL) with Kain Lyon.  In 2010 Tyler graduated from the University of Calgary with a Bachelor of Commerce and in the same year started working as an accountant at Johnston Morrison Hunter & Co. in Medicine Hat.  In early 2013 he obtained his CA designation, and in 2017 he obtained his US CPA designation.

The YMCA has been a big part of Tyler’s life from being a platform to allow him to train for competition in powerlifting, as well as the place where he met his wife, Nicole.  Tyler is excited to be able to serve the YMCA as a board member, and looks forward to the changes and growth that will occur through the years.

Shonna Barth | Chair, Governance Committee

Shonna is a high school vice principal with experience teaching at all levels.  Her passion for family, fitness, fun and youth drew her to becoming a board member of the YMCA of Medicine Hat. She has extensive experience with various boards and planning committees. Many of her professional and personal experiences have revolved around supporting the mental, social, physical and academic health of our youth.  During her second year of her three-year term, Shonna is part of the Governance committee, PSA squash tournament committee and an active member in the YMCA squash league.  Shonna is always open to learn and accept new challenges. 

Mel Deydey | Chair, Philanthropy Committee

Mel Deydey is a retired teacher and administrator after completing a teaching career that spanned 39 years in both Manitoba and Alberta. Born and raised in Manitoba, Mel obtained his Bachelor of Science degree from Brandon University and his Bachelor of Education degree from the University of Manitoba. His teaching career began in Hartney, MB before moving to Alberta in 1978. After retiring as Principal of St. Patrick's School in 2012, he worked four tax seasons as an accounting technician for a local CA firm. Today, he works as a substitute teacher for MHCBE.

Mel is active in the community. Besides serving as a member of the YMCA Board of Directors and Chair of the Philanthropy Committee, he also serves on the boards of the Medicine Hat and District Retired Teachers Association, the Alberta Retired Teachers Association, the Medicine Hat Horticultural Society, St. Patrick's Church Parish Council and co-chair of the local 100 Men Who Give A Damn organization.

Mel and his wife, Chris have been members of the YMCA for many years because of their strong belief in physical fitness and living a healthy lifestyle.

 In retirement, between their volunteer activities, they enjoy spending as much time as possible at their cabin in Elkwater, as well as the time they get to spend with their three grandchildren.

Brian Widmer | Director

Brian Widmer is a Portfolio Manager and Certified Financial Planner (CFP) with CIBC Wood Gundy. Brian is a graduate of the University of Lethbridge, holding a Bachelor of Management degree, with a major in Finance. A strong advocate for several local causes, Brian's past community involvement also includes Chair of the Business Advocacy Committee and Director for the Medicine Hat & District Chamber of Commerce.  Brian serves as a member of the Audit & Finance Committee.

Peter Donnelly| Director

Peter Donnelly is currently Vice-President, Marketing at Cancarb Limited, where he has been employed in various roles over the past twenty-three years. He has been a board member of the YMCA of Medicine Hat since 2008 and currently serves on the Audit and Finance Committee and as board representative on the Strong Kids Campaign Committee. He is an active user of both the South Ridge and the Downtown Y locations and has also lead Day of Caring events at the YMCA Camp at Elkwater and the Crescent Heights Daycare Centre.

Glen Allan | Director

Glen Allan teaches economics, statistics, finance and strategic management at Medicine Hat College and for Mount Royal University. He holds a Bachelor of Commerce degree from the University of Calgary as well as an MBA from Dalhousie University.

Prior to teaching, he spent more than 20 years in the banking industry, which included roles in personal banking, agriculture lending, and commercial & corporate lending. He also currently sits on the Medicine Hat College Board of Governors', and is past member of the Entre-corp Community Futures board of directors, and has been President of the Canadian Mental Health Association of southeastern Alberta for the past four years.

Growing up in a family of entrepreneurs, he has also been involved in a variety of commercial ventures including a partnership in a large turkey farm for 10 years, a partner in a real estate investment company and owner and operator of a small marketing and promotion business.

David Petis | Director

David Petis joined Medicine College as Vice-President, Advancement April 1, 2015. He oversees an integrated program of marketing, communications, services to alumni and friends of the college, business operations, government relations, and development. As well Petis also leads Brooks Campus and Continuing Studies for the College.  Petis has 25 years of experience in institutional advancement, external relations and fundraising. Prior to his arrival at MHC, he held executive positions at the University of Alberta, where he was the Assistant Dean of Engineering (External Relations), and more recently Vice President Advancement for Brock University. He serves on several boards and proudly calls Medicine Hat home.

Raegan Weeks | Director

Dr. Reagan Weeks is the assistant superintendent for Prairie Rose School Division. In the past she has served as the principal of Elm Street School, the vice principal of Southview School, and a teacher at River Heights School. She received her undergraduate degree from the University of Alberta, her M.B.A. from Royal Roads and her doctorate from Johns Hopkins University. Reagan also sits on the Board for Thrive, a local initiative dedicated to ending poverty, and is committed to the social and emotional wellbeing of children and youth.

She is grateful for the opportunity to contribute to the YMCA community, which provides a breadth of wellness initiatives to South Eastern Alberta.

Alison Landreville | Director

As a Registered Nurse, Alison has had the opportunity to work in a number of different capacities including Intensive Care, teaching at the University of Alberta, and work in medication safety and accreditation. She has also served on the boards of the College and Association of Registered Nurses of Alberta (CARNA) and the Alberta Registered Nurses Education Trust (ARNET). Alison is starting a new journey with a role focused on the implementation of a province wide clinical information system for Alberta Health Services.

Alison completed both her Bachelor of Science in Nursing and Masters in Nursing at the University of Alberta. She moved to Medicine Hat 5 years ago and is excited to be able to give back to the community as a board member for the Medicine Hat YMCA.
